We are observing National Bully Prevention Month and will observe Red Ribbon Week from October 23rd to 31st. The 2024 Red Ribbon Week Campaign theme is Life Is A Movie, Film Drug Free. We will have themed days during the week of October 28th. We are asking all students to participate so that we can show that using drugs is not acceptable and that we are against bullying of any kind.
National Bullying Prevention Month was created in response to the need to raise awareness of bullying, as it was historically viewed as "a childhood rite of passage" and believed that bullying "made kids tougher," when the reality is that bullying has devastating effects such as school avoidance, loss of self-esteem, increased anxiety, and depression. We are educating our students on what bullying is and the consequences of bullying, as well as increasing their awareness of bystander power. First through eighth-grade students will have an assembly next week to discuss what bullying is and ways to address bullying.
Red Ribbon Week was designed to create awareness concerning the problems related to the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Red Ribbon Week started in 1985 as a means of honoring D.E.A. agent Enrique Camarena, who lost his life in the line of duty. Today, Red Ribbon Week has grown into a national observance-‐a time for schools and communities nationwide to unite against drugs. Students in grades four through twelve will have assemblies next week to address the dangers associated with the use of tobacco and other drugs.
During the week of October 28th, students will participate in themed days and be provided with resources on bullying and drug prevention. Please take advantage of this time and, over the next two weeks, to open a dialogue at home and discuss issues like peer pressure, making the right choices for a healthy, drug-free future, and accepting and including everyone in a bully-free environment. Together, we all can make a difference.
